Young Malaysian Achievers Who Will Make You Say “Cayalah!”
Cayalah: A Malay slang word which is basically an exclamation similar to ‘awesome’ or ‘cool’ [Fuh, kau dapat straight A’s! Cayalah! / Wow, you got straight A’s! Awesome!]
Here are four interesting stories that have gone viral across the Internet. Who knew that we had such outstanding homegrown talents? In fact, you can do the same! #MalaysiaBoleh
We Want Our Names On Asteroids, Too!
Penangites Melvin Cheng Choon Lei and Tham Yong Shiang from SMJK Chung Ling will now be able to tell their children when they get older that they have their names among the celestial bodies like Halley’s Comet and the dwarf planet Ceres.
An asteroid will be named after the students who won the Chemistry category of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2019 (Intel ISEF) in the United States. The boys successfully made crude cinnamon extract into a cost-effective and eco-friendly larvicide which can be used to combat and get rid of the Aedes mosquito larvae, which they claim is 90% cheaper than commercial pesticide. Currently, they are working to get the research published before applying for a patent.
They are the third Malaysians to win at Intel ISEF, after Faye Jong-Sow Fei from Sarawak who won the Environmental Management Award in 2015. Intel ISEF, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, was held from May 11 to 18 in Arizona this year and participated by 1,800 finalists from 80 countries.
Three Cheers for Three Outstanding Malaysians!
Nineteen year olds Muhammad Aniq Hilman Haslimi, Grace Sian Ern Sui and Mateshan Varma Subramaniam have been appointed to pursue their studies and prepare to become military officers at three prestigious United States (US) service academies. The three of them, all MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Alumni, have completed their foundation studies at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).
Expected to graduate in 2023, the students will be joining the exclusive ranks of 30 Malaysians who have graduated from American military academies since 1971.
Congratulations! We’re all so proud of you!

Malaysia’s Got Talent
The city of Kajang is now famous for mathematics thanks to 15-year-old “Human Calculator” Yaashwin Sarawanan. The SMK Bandar Tun Hussein Onn (2) student’s impressive math skills earned him the second place in Asia’s Got Talent Season Three.
At the age of 7, thanks to his parents, who enrolled him in an abacus and mental arithmetic class, Yaashwin mastered the intricacies of calculation over the years. While others may have issues doing maths without pen and paper, he finishes complex calculations in his head without much fuss! #wowda
