Malaysian-born Animator Makes Her Mark In Hollywood
It was a dream come true for 26-year-old, Andrea Goh Siau Wei when she first secured an internship with Disney Pixar three years ago. The Malaysian talent was brought on board as a technical director intern.
Since then, Andrea has built a name for herself in the world of digital animation. In fact, she was one of the many masterminds behind recent box office hits like ‘Toy Story 4’, ‘Cars 3’ and ‘Incredibles 2’. In an interview with The Star, she said enthusiastically, “it was a blast working on Toy Story 4, and it made me think of some of my childhood toys.”
Originating from Kuala Lumpur, Andrea works as a layout artist at Pixar Animation Studios in California. Her job scope requires her to manage frames, camera angles, camera path and lighting in key animation movie scenes.
She had the opportunity of landing her dream job when news of a Pixar seminar first caught her attention. The seminar was organised by the One Academy. She attended the talk and immediately knew animation was her calling – “I enrolled at the Academy after that because I knew I wanted to work at Pixar.”
She applied for the Pixar Undergraduate Programme and got accepted. During the course of the programme, she had the opportunity to experience how movies are made in production studios. For instance, she was immersed in the process of rigging where she had to learn how to animate digital skeletons into 3D animation characters. This process allows animators to bend animated characters into their desired pose.
Her words of wisdom for aspiring artists -“Find out what you really want. Dig deeper. Do your research, keep trying, keep practising and just work really hard.”
Congratulations, Andrea! You have made Malaysia proud and we look forward to witness more of your creative works.
