“When One Door Closes, Another Opens”
By Chee Swee Yoke
When Joe Chang first stepped into the local entertainment scene, he had no aspirations of becoming a radio host. In fact, he intended to pursue a career in music having participated in singing competitions with his friends. In 2010, he came in fourth on Astro Star Quest, a Chinese singing competition by Astro Wah Lai Toi.
“I went to participate in a singing contest with a group of friends who also love to sing. I wanted to become a singer but the results weren’t satisfying. The only option left was to become a radio host.”
Surprisingly, Chang, who loves football and basketball, aspired to be a sportsman as a child. After a year-long stint as a hairstylist, Joe went on to become a TV host. After three years, he switched to radio broadcasting and joined Astro’s Chinese radio station, MY FM.
Although unable to fulfill his dream of becoming a singer, Joe enjoys conversing about songs, speaking to fans on air, interviewing celebrities and reporting on current affairs. Over the years, he has gained a strong fan following. His followers not only admire him for his work ethic and warm personality – “The audiences and fans are always welcomed to greet me or take a picture with me when they meet me,” he says in an assuring manner.
His ability to persist and perfect his skills is a source of inspiration to many of his young followers.
Due to his impressive track record, Joe is now a senior radio host of a new Malaysian Chinese radio station, GOXUAN. Despite the fun aspects of his job, it is anything but easy. As a matter of fact, Joe claims the workload can be pretty heavy.
“The public might think that a radio host only works during airtime. But in fact, we do more than that. We are in charge of program planning, radio production, participating in projects and providing ideas or opinions on things.”
Budding radio hosts out there should definitely take a cue from Joe’s adaptability, perseverance and time management skills!
