Single mom, Mahani Udit, The ‘Jalur Gemilang’ Costume Designer
By Archana Patrick and John Tan
Four years ago, when Mahani Udit, tried her hand at sewing patriotic costumes for her daughters, never in her wildest dreams did she expect to become a full-time tailor!
‘When I first made the Merdeka costume, it was just to test how far I can create clothes… didn’t know it would be so welcomed,’ Mahani told The Rakyat Post.
It all fell into place when her twin daughters won the ‘best patriotic outfit’ competition at their kindergarten. Many orders started pouring in for her Merdeka costumes mostly from parents and teachers who were impressed by the single mother’s talent.
Last year, Mahani made 1,000 national flag outfits and hopes to receive more orders this year.
The 30-year-old single mother beat all the odds to raise her children when her husband left them. She juggled two jobs daily as a coconut water hawker and part-time tailor.
Mahani’s hard work eventually paid off. Now, she is the proud owner of Anggerik Rimba Alteration, a boutique in Bukit Jambul, Penang.
At present, Mahani who is also a Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) management course long distance learning student, is busy sewing 30 outfits a day to fulfill orders from teachers.
What an inspiring story! Just as the saying goes, ‘A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work’.
