To Sir, With Love: Remembering Cikgu Saad bin Shaari
Students and teachers alike suffered a huge loss on August 13, 2019, when Saad bin Shaari, fondly known as Cikgu Saad passed away suddenly. He was 57 years old. When the news broke out via @SPMFlix, tributes have been pouring in to honour this dedicated and caring teacher.
Who is Cikgu Saad?
He was celebrated as the well-known voice and teacher of The Sejarah Show via BACflix.com, a free online learning portal with a mission to provide equal access to quality education for all Malaysian students. He was instrumental in making their Sejarah video, “Sejarah Show”, and SPM Seminar possible over the past 5 years. I have only seen some of the videos, but he was one of them, and from what I can see students have relied on it often when they are preparing themselves for exams.

As student @nishatan writes, “Tumpang tanya, arwah cikgu sakit apa? Cikgu ni ajar i masa seminar tahun lepas😭salam takziah😌semoga keluarganya diberi kekuatan dan kesabaran❤..arwah baik orgnya, semoga arwah ditempatkan dikalangan orang-orang yg beriman, semoga roh arwah dicucuri rahmat , semoga kuburnya lapang dan syurga tempatnya in shaa Allah aamin😘 #sad
May I also add that Cikgu Saad made Sejarah more humane and to do so is a greater achievement than just looking at it as another subject in school. He made it seem like he was sharing “His Story”.
He was the encapsulation of the idea that life is a marathon, not a sprint. For Cikgu Saad, learning was not something that you do in your teens and twenties, and then start a career – it was a lifelong mission. It’s a journey that most don’t have the mental or physical wherewithal to pursue as long as he did, and it’s inspiring (and sometimes intimidating) to see someone who has touched so many lives through his experience as a teacher.
There is so much more to say about his work and life. He was a kind man, extremely concerned for students, and supportive of non-profit work in providing free education to all Malaysian students.
For now, let us share some of the thoughts from students and teachers alike who have been flooding social media with their tributes to Cikgu Saad.
Good teachers share knowledge. Great teachers inspire and their footprints live on in the hearts of their students, forever!
