‘Pasar Malam’ – Experience Malaysia’s Street Food Culture At Its Best!

Home to diverse cultures, food has become a symbol of Malaysia’s pride. But, why? The answer is simple – Malaysian food is really good! The best part is, you can get it almost anywhere and at any time of the day in local neighbourhoods across the country – that’s right, we are talking about local night markets or popularly known as pasar malam in the Malay language.
As Malaysia Day is just around the corner, we bring you a glimpse of some unique night markets in Malaysia celebrating our diverse nation.
Pasar Malam Setia Alam, Shah Alam
This pasar malam stretches across 2.4 km boasting a variety of Malay and Chinese cuisine as well as other Asian delicacies and snacks to devour. Ranging from Taiwanese Egg Burger to Fried Durian, it is not surprising that this night market was named the longest pasar malam in the 2011 Malaysian Book of Records (Amazing!).

Operating hours: Saturday, 6 pm to 11 pm.
Pasar Malam Taman Connaught, Cheras
Pasar Malam Taman Connaught is regarded by many locals as one of the most happening night markets in Kuala Lumpur. Nowadays, even tourists flock to this night market not only to sample good food but also to hunt for clothes, electronic gadgets and even household items! With close to 700 stalls and food varying in flavour, you will definitely be spoilt for choice! This night market is known to operate until the wee hours of the morning (1 AM, to be precise!) which gives everyone ample time to explore the vast area.
Location: Jalan Cerdas, Taman Connaught, 56000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.
Operating hours: Wednesday, 5 pm to 1 am.
Plaza Mont Kiara, Fiesta Night Market
This night market may not seem like the first thing that comes to mind when one mentions the word pasar malam, but don’t be fooled! There’s still plenty this night market located at the courtyard area in Plaza Mont Kiara has to offer! Check out a variety of books, affordable clothing and of course, food especially desserts. Open as early as 3 pm, office workers around the area tend to drop by for their tea-time fix.

Farlim Night Market, Penang
Dubbed one of the biggest and most popular night markets in Penang, this night market located in a housing area in Farlim draws a large crowd of locals and tourists alike with food and goods which are reasonably priced. Be prepared to leave with a full stomach after a visit to this night market! (here’s a drool-worthy image of fries to tantalise your tastebuds!).

Operating hours: Wednesday, 6 pm to 11.30 pm
Ipoh Walk Night Bazaar, Perak
Among the top attractions in Perak’s capital city of Ipoh is the pasar malam located at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah nearby the AEON Kinta City Mall and next to TM point. Dubbed as Malaysia’s largest night market to date, it is home to around 1,000 stalls and even free parking and WiFi as well as other facilities such as toilets and surau.
Based on the images captured by those who have ventured to this night market, it sure seems like a food haven!
Operating hours: Tuesday to Sunday , 4 pm until 1 am (on Tuesday to Thursday) and will be extended until 3 am (on Friday to Sunday).
Saberkas Night Market, Miri, Sarawak
If you happen to travel to the city of Miri in Sarawak, this night market located at the Saberkas Commercial Centre, is worth a visit! Apart from an array of food items, potted plants are also a unique feature of this night market!
Location: 2214, 2206, Jalan Saberkas Utama, Saberkas Commercial Centre, 98000 Miri, Sarawak.
Operating hours: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 4 pm till about 10 pm.
