What do a young pop star and octogenarian have in common? The answer may surprise us all.
British pop star, Louis Tomlinson who rose to fame as a member of boy band, One Direction, revealed that it was only over a month ago that he developed a unique bond with octogenarian, Richard Green over their personal grief and a visit to Richard’s home in Yorkshire.
Richard who has worn many hats throughout his life as a taxi driver, actor and even served in the Royal Air Force, lost his wife Pat due to Alzheimer’s disease in December 2016, around the same time Louis’ mother, aged 43, lost her battle against leukaemia. Louis was also reported to be coping with the untimely death of his 18-year-old sister from a suspected heart attack just a few months ago.
Both having to cope with loss of their loved ones, Louis decided to lift Richard’s spirits up and help him fulfill his bucket list of items he had always wanted to complete with his wife before her demise. Louis wrote on Instagram, “He had a few things he wanted to do so I thought I’d help him out. Richard is a classic example of a fearless man who in light of tragedy still pushes himself to live with as much laughter and happiness as possible.”
The footage features both men sharing light moments together, in particular, where each share their personal moments in coping with grief – “Initially, when Pat died, I couldn’t get over it, I used to weep and breakdown. Over the years, I thought you got to get on with life”, said Richard.
Although decades apart, both men enjoyed each other’s company as they set about ticking off each item on Richard’s bucket list – they flew in a helicopter; drove race cars and even went on a rollercoaster ride! The highlight of their adventure, would definitely be Richard ending up giving Louis a new tattoo of his initials “R.G” and the octogenarian’s remarkable rendition of Andrea Bocelli’s, Con Te Partiro at a huge arena.
What Louis decided to do next with the footage of his adventures with Richard is even more touching – he used it to make the viral music video for his new single “Two of Us”, a tribute to his mother with tear-jerking lyrics, in particular, lines from the chorus – “I know you’ll be looking down, swear I’m gonna make you proud and I’ll be living one life for the two of us”.
Louis wrote, “If ‘Two of Us’ can help just one other person who’s going through the tough time that I went through, then that would make me really happy”.
Louis and Richard’s unlikely friendship goes to show that we are more alike than what makes us different, be it through shared grief and one sustained by a love for music and friendship. No matter how old one may be, spending time with a good friend can be healing – #LouisandRichard !
