Comvita Malaysia, the world’s #1 UMF™-certified Manuka honey company from New Zealand, has kickstarted a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme to help fight the hunger crisis rampant within Malaysia’s marginalised communities.
Having donated RM10,000 to FreeMakan, Comvita Malaysia has also pledged to channel 15% of its online sales, between 25th July to 14th August 2021.

Rommel Irwan, Comvita’s Southeast Asia Head, said Comvita intended to support and help those whose livelihoods have been severely affected during the pandemic.
“We had initially contributed RM10,000 as a donation to FreeMakan in hopes to feed these communities, but we realised that more must be done,” said Rommel, adding that Comvita’s core value is ‘Kaitiakitanga’, a New Zealand native term based on the Māori world views of conservation, replenishment, and sustainability of the environment.
“At Comvita, we act on behalf of future generations and are committed to protecting the delicate balance of our ecosystems. It is our belief that social, environmental and economic prosperity are intertwined. Hence, we felt strongly in giving back and supporting communities in need.”
“Our partnership with FreeMakan will see us working together to do more for these communities. We are appealing to Malaysians to help make a difference by purchasing our products online between 25th July to 14th August 2021, so we can channel 15% of all sales, during this period, to FreeMakan,” Rommel said.
Moo Tik Pin, BAC’s Food Bank representative, said FreeMakan was launched in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the urgent need to eradicate food poverty in Malaysia. Dry rations are provided to people struggling with hunger and food insecurity.
“To date, the initiative has successfully raised RM776,083.84 and provided provisions to over 16,000 families from B40 and other marginalised communities across Peninsular Malaysia.
“We are grateful to Comvita Malaysia for their help and support in raising awareness about the hunger crisis in Malaysia. We hope to encourage more Malaysians to increase their efforts in helping the poor, homeless and unemployed, especially during this pandemic,” said Moo, adding that FreeMakan is a BAC Food Bank Initiative.
