Malaysia is known for being a multilingual country and houses speakers of approximately 137 languages. Apart from the national language Bahasa Malaysia (Malay), Mandarin and Tamil, it is home to native speakers of a plethora of dialects.
As Malaysians, we ought to be familiar with the regional dialects of Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah. Each dialect has their own uniqueness and contributes to the distinct identity of each state. In fact, the slogan for the Kelantan state football club in Kelantanese – ‘Gomo Kelate Gomo’ (Fight Kelantan Fight) received the international spotlight due to its catchy phrase.
This time, a recent viral TikTok video has garnered massive attention and has put the Kelantan dialect at the national limelight within the TikTok community. The video showcased a female flight attendant using the Kelantan dialect while making an announcement.
While the video is merely made for laughs and gags, the viewers were very impressed by the proficiency in the Kelantan dialect. Known as Mek Yun, she explained in another video that she is of Chinese descent, which made her videos gain fame quick.
Mek Yun stated that despite being Chinese, she was not fluent in Mandarin since her parents did not enroll her into a Chinese vernacular school. However, she is able to converse in another dialect instead, which is Hokkien.
The comment section was filled with positive remarks and praises for Mek Yun’s proficiency in the Kelantan dialect.
One even said, “It would, so the best (be good), if our flight attendants actually did this!”
In fact, a lot have even requested for her to create more content using the dialect.
Thus far, the video had garnered 52.8K likes, 938 comments and 1978 shares on TikTok.
