While it is a mandatory requirement for everyone to use a face mask when out in public, our health director-general has since encouraged additional protection measures against Covid-19.
Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had before this urged the public to use double face masks and now, he is encouraging the use of face shields.
“Face masks and face shields can help prevent community transmission when physical distancing and stay-at-home measures are relaxed or no longer possible.
“It should be included as part of strategies to safely and significantly reduce transmission in the community setting,” he said in a statement on Facebook.
According to him, the use of a face shield with double masks can give up to 96 per cent protection from the Delta variant that is dominant in our country.
Dr Noor Hisham, in his public appearances, has also been sporting double masks and a face shield.
The Health Ministry previously cited information from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention which showed double masking can improve protection against Covid-19 infection.
This involves wearing a cloth mask on the outside and a surgical mask on the inside.
So, in conclusion, the combination of double masking and using a face shield would probably provide us adequate protection against the transmission of this virus.
