Johor will be constructing another zoo on 20.2 hectares of land in the Iskandar Puteri area.
State Housing and Local Government Exco, Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the area recommended for the construction of the new zoo has been identified.
He also added that the existing 94 -year-old zoo located at Jalan Gertak Merah, Taman Istana Johor Bahru which is the oldest zoo in Malaysia will be maintained.
“The construction of this new zoo is still in the early stages of discussion with public and private agencies.
“Several domestic and foreign zoos that have managed to attract the highest number of visitors will be used as examples such as the Singapore Zoological Gardens, Melaka Zoo and Taiping Zoo,” he said at a press conference in conjunction with the First Session of the 15th Johor State Assembly (DUN), in Kota Iskandar on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Datuk Jafni, who is also the Bukit Permai State Assemblyman (ADUN), informed the state government in the process of upgrading and repairing the existing zoo facilities.
“The existing zoo at Jalan Gertak Merah which has been operating since 1928 is now in the process of being upgraded including plumbing works.
“The zoo has been temporarily closed since October 18, 2020,” he added.
