Mr. Badrul Jamili Kamaruddin may have just won the award for the best restaurant owner, here’s why.

Located within Kompleks Dagangan Indera Mahkota in Kuantan, Pahang, is Restoran Dapur Infaq Ummah operated by Mr Badrul where food is literally served to those in hunger!

For every visit, customers can pay as they like. However, if they choose not to pay, they can consider the meal as a gift from the owner and are always welcome to eat at the store again. (Generous, indeed!)

But how does Mr Badrul earn an income to sustain his restaurant business?

Despite financial commitments, Mr. Badrul reiterates the purpose behind the “pay as you wish” and free meals for the needy – to serve the community of students and the less fortunate living in the area.

“The concept will not give us much profit but it is a necessary step to help the community,” said the owner in an interview with Sinar Harian. Even profits from the business is donated to the needy. For instance, the income is utilised to aid programs for Asnaf groups and the homeless.

The business which has been running for the past three months operates from 7 am to 12 pm on the weekdays. Some of its popular dishes include chicken curry, nasi lemak, and a variety of local delicacies or kuih.

One frequent customer, Ahmad Zaheruddin Ahmad Sabri was amazed by Mr. Badrul’s generous efforts in putting the needs of the community first over profits – “I can obviously see that the business is done out of pure benevolence, not to mention that the food here is good. If you have extra money to spare, why don’t you pay more so that you can eat and donate at the same time.

“You will always be rewarded for any donation that you have made, not only in this world but also in the afterlife.”

It is always heartwarming to see fellow Malaysians, like Mr. Badrul making a positive contribution to the community.
