With the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics underway, the Malaysian contingent has shown impeccable performances throughout. Adding on the list is national Boccia champion Chew Wen Lun, who clinched Malaysia’s third medal in prestigious sporting event, bringing home a silver medal.
During the exciting final of the Boccia mixed individual BC1 on 1st September yesterday, Wei Lun conceded a narrow lost to world number one David Smith (Great Britain) to finish second place.
Earlier on the in first End, Wei Lun secured a 2-0 lead, proving himself a strong competitor to Smith. However, as things were heating up, the two poured their all out for the points and Smith edged out Wei Lun with a narrow one-point margin in End two and three. Smith then retained his title in the end.
Wei Lun was undefeated prior to the final. He ousted Brazil in the opening game of the preliminaries 5-2 and maintained his momentum throughout the tournament.
The 26-year-old Malaysian won against world number two Witsanu Huadpradit of Thailand (4-3), world number eight Korean Sungjoon Jung (9-3), and defeated Katerina Curinova of the Czech Republic as well.
In the knockout rounds, Wei Lun claim victory over China and Portugal before heading to the final round.
Wei Lun managed to make a household name for himself in his Paralympics debut, pulling off an upset in Tokyo.
