Malaysia- a land full of culture and extraordinary beauty queens.
Just recently, Miss Grand Malaysia Jasebel Robert carved a historical moment by becoming one of the Top 10 Finalist in the Miss Grand International 2020 pageant.
Not only was Jasebel the first ever Malaysian to be among the top 10 (out of 64 contestants), she also won Miss Popular Vote during the finals on Saturday, March 27.
The title was ultimately granted to Miss Grand USA Abena Appiah.
Jasebel is of Chinese and Indian parentage and a native to Kuala Lumpur. Other contestants hailed from the Philippines, Guatemala, Indonesia, Brazil, Czech Republic, Puerto Rico, Thailand, and Argentina. Throughout the competition, participants were judged and given scores based on interviews, preliminary competitions, and social media votes.
Jasebel managed to garner many votes during the preliminaries but what caught the attention of the judges and users on social media was her Mak Yong custom national costume. The design by Ain Mohamad was inspired by the olden Malay theatrical dance.
Jasebel was also a contestant in the Miss Universe Malaysia 2018 pageant, in which she came in fourth.
In awe with the amount of support, Jasebel took it to Instagram to express her gratitude.
“This post is dedicated to everyone who put tremendous effort into voting and supporting me, I can’t explain how grateful I am towards you guys. This award is for all of you, not me!”
