A 16-year-old girl who was reported missing in the United States was found after she used hand signals to show a driver she was in danger.
The driver recognised the hand signals and called 911 after he also noticed that the teenager appeared to be in distress.
Her hand signals also went viral on TikTok.
The gesture the teenager is believed to have used was created to allow victims of domestic violence to ask silently for help and gained publicity in the United Kingdom following conversations about women’s safety.
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky said police later arrested the 61-year-old suspect from Cherokee, North Carolina as he was driving near Kentucky interstate.
The girl was found inside the car. She was reported missing by her parents in Asheville, North Carolina two days earlier.
Laurel County Sheriff, John Root said the girl told officers she had travelled with the suspect through North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.
The hand sign which went viral last year involves putting your palm up before tucking your thumb in and closing your fingers.
