Kate Moss’s daughter, 19-year-old Lila Moss, made headlines this week after walking in the Fendi x Versace fashion show, during Milan Fashion Week.

The young model fiercely took to the catwalk, in a one-piece white and gold swimsuit, matching jacket, and bag. However, she also sported another important accessory, her insulin pump! The Omnipod insulin pump, for type 1 diabetes, was clearly visible on her upper left thigh as she confidently strutted down the runway.

Type 1 diabetes, although not as common as type 2 diabetes, is still unfortunately considered a chronic condition, impacting nearly 1.1 million children and adolescents below the age of 20. It is when the pancreas is unable to produce the necessary amounts of insulin the body needs, to allow sugar to enter the cells and provide energy.

While there is no cure for diabetes, there are treatments that can help control sugar levels and prevent further complications. The Omnipod is one of those available treatments, and unlike regular insulin injections, the pod is a tubeless pump that is programmed to automatically dispense specific amounts of insulin. It can be worn for up to 72 hours, as it continuously delivers insulin, making life easier for individuals struggling with diabetes.

Lila’s inspiring act created online buzz and she received plenty of praise and attention from fans, and guests at the fashion show.

Thank you for not hiding your diabetes!! You are gorgeous!!

Thank you for wearing your Insulin pump so proudly 💙💪🏻

Absolutely love that you don’t hide your pod, you’re an inspiration to so many living with T1 diabetes

Based on all the online comments she received, it is clear that Lila’s decision to strut the runway while displaying her Omnipod, inspired and surprised many diabetic individuals. The diabetes shame game is real, and has had some severe negative impacts on the social life, mental health, and self-care routines, of diabetic individuals around the world. With unfair stigma’s and false representations, it is not easy living with diabetes.

As such, it is so encouraging to see a young model openly express herself and not hide her chronic condition from the public. This not only advocates for individuals with T1 diabetes, but also raises public awareness on the condition. Pulling this off in such an exigent and carping industry, Lila certainly deserves all the compliments and praise she is getting. Hopefully, this incident will act as a teaching moment that invokes more positively influential and inspiring moments, like this one.
