National powerlifting athlete, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin stunned the crowed when he won the gold medal in the 72-kilogram category at the 2021 World Powerlifting Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, late last night.
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champion swept the gold medal after lifting a staggering 210kg thus defending the championship he won in the 2019 edition in Kazakhstan.
The 22-year-old Sarawak-born athlete overtook his rival challenger from China, Hu Peng who won silver with a record of 196kg while Egyptian athlete, Shaaban Ibrahim won bronze with a weight of 195kg.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu congratulated Bonnie’s success in Tbilisi which he described as something that the country is proud of.
“Congratulations Bonnie. Malaysia is proud of you,” said Ahmad Faizal through a post on his Facebook, today.
