Chris Deng Vinsien, from the Kayan-Kenyah community in Baram, Sarawak has made history by being offered to pursue law at the prestigious Oxford University in the United Kingdom.

Chris said he could not believe it when he learned of the offer and attributes his success to his parents who have been his source of inspiration.

“I am proud and happy to be given this opportunity and want to prove to everyone that a student from this minority group can make it,” he said.

He said his parents, Vinsien Gau Jalong and Maria Deng Wan were raised in Long Banyok and Long Laput in Baram.

“My parents are delighted and hope I will continue to work hard and achieve a first-class honours in future,” he said, adding that he wanted to make Sarawakians proud.

Chris was raised in Bintulu and was sent to a boarding school when he was 13-years-old.

Apart from being a high achiever, Chris has also been active in curriculum activities like debates and music.

He continued his studies at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Mukah, then did his A-levels at Kolej Yayasan UEM, Selangor.

“It is my dream to help my fellow Sarawakians and also want to prove to them that we can achieve anything no matter who we are,” he added.

Apart from being accepted to Oxford, he was also offered a place in London School of Economics and King’s College, London.
