“It is awkward!”
That was the spontaneous reaction expressed by the country’s diving queen Pandelela Rinong Pamg on news she will be receiving her Datukship.
Despite its awkwardness, the 28 -year -old Bidayuh from Bau, was still proud to receive the award that she never even dreamed of receiving.
She was among the 17 recipients of the Panglima Setia Bintang Sarawak (PSBS), which carries the title Dato, at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly.
“This is my most beautiful memory,” she told Astro Awani.
The National Diving Queen had received the Ahli Mangku Negara and Jasa Bakti Sarawak medal in 2016, following her silver medal success in the Rio De Janeiro Olympics.
After Rio, her performances continued to flourish on the international stage, when she won gold in the World Diving Championships in Japan this year, for the 10 meter rhythmic event.
“It motivates me to be more serious in carrying the name of the state and the country,” she said.
Pandelela is the first sportsperson from Sarawak to earn this title.
