Malaysian-born entrepreneur, Maha Sinnathamby has made Malaysia proud with his recent achievement. Sinnathamby who is the chairman and founder of Australia’s Springfield City Group has been bestowed with the award of an Appointment as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia (General Division) by Queen Elizabeth II in her Birthday Honours 2019 List.
This achievement recognises his significant contribution to Australia’s building and construction industry. More importantly, it acknowledges his efforts in making the multi-award winning City of Springfield in Queensland into what it is today.
Sinnathamby expressed joy receiving the award and thanked a few significant individuals who made his success possible – “the full credit for this award has to go to my wife, Yoga, and my business partner, Bob Sharpless, as well as to the residents who now call Greater Springfield home,” he said.
“This award is also an acknowledgement and testimony that with passion and dedication and a never-give-up attitude, anyone can benefit from this great country,” he added.
Sinnathamby was also recently named the 47th richest man in Australia with a net worth of AUD$ 1.66 billion. Hailing from Rantau, Negeri Sembilan, he first moved to Australia when he was only eighteen years old to pursue a degree in engineering. This eventually led him to migrate there permanently in 1971.
When he first arrived in Australia, Springfield City was at its lowest state. As Australia’s former Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnball mentioned, the city was built from scratch. In fact, the 3,000 hectare parcel of land was considered economically and socially depressed; with only 10% of it viable for residential use.
However, thanks to Sinnathamby, Springfield City is now arguably one of the country’s fastest-emerging cities. The city has over 41,000 residents and a population that is expected to grow in the next two decades.
It’s always admirable to see our fellow Malaysians reach their full potential and achieve incredible things. Mr Sinnathamby’s inspirational story is a reminder that hard work and determination is truly the recipe for success!
