Thousands of yellow butterflies mesmerised motorists as they flew along the road in Kota Marudu, Sabah recently.
According to Nurul Asna Hidayah, who witnessed the spectacular event, she and her friend first thought it was falling yellow leaves.
“However, when we went closer, we saw more and more of them.
The butterflies were coming from the forests and the road surface was filled with them,” she said.
Nurul, from Perak, was in Sabah for a community project and said it was the first time she had witnessed such a phenomenon.
Locals later informed her that it was the ‘Kolibambang Tosilou’ or ‘Bambayangan Osilou’ season, and there would be time where those butterflies are white in colour.
“I was also informed that the phenomena occurred every 20 years and that it often took place in March.
“However, this time, the butterflies appeared again,” she said.
Nurul said such an experience was inexplicable as it is a personal experience, subjective and informal.
