The special connection between a carpenter and his wife is their love for stray dogs. In fact, the middle-aged couple, Thean Yoon Wah and Chan Li Yan run “Puppy’s Loving Home”, a shelter home for abandoned dogs located in Serendah, Hulu Selangor. Given his skills in carpentry, Mr. Thean builds shelters to shield these stray dogs from the rain.
There was a time when the couple had to transport 40 dogs from Ipoh to Rawang. Currently, the centre in Serendah is home to 120 stray dogs including dogs with disabilities as the couple pays special attention to ones that are blind, deaf and in need of physical aid.
“Stray dogs are very pitiful and need help”, said Mr. Thean to The Star.
Aside from just feeding them, the couple also shares a special bond with their four-legged friends. Ms. Chan even speaks to them regularly and has gifted them with names and identities.
“All the strays are given names except for five two-month-old puppies,” she said, adding that she recognizes all her fur kids.
Unfortunately given their financial circumstances, the couple can only do so much. With more funds coming in, they could provide shelter and care for stray dogs. For instance, they could build additional shelters and pave the land with cement to house more canine residents.
“On rainy seasons, centipedes can be a threat to these strays if they get bitten. It is hard to see these creatures in sandy ground with grass,” Ms Chan told The Star.
In addition, more allowance would permit them to provide better food such as meat, rice and dog food instead of just plan porridge to the dogs.
The couple’s proudest moments are definitely happy endings for such puppies when people come forward to adopt them. This year alone, three dogs including a Shar-Pei were welcomed into new homes.
So, if you are looking to welcome a four-legged friend as a new member into your family, or an adorable Christmas present for keeps, Puppy’s Loving Home could be on your list of places to check out!
We salute Mr. Thean and Ms. Chan who are rich in kindness in caring for a man’s best friend!
