The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is set to create history by having the world’s highest fire station – more than 3,382 meters above sea level, at Mount Kinabalu in Ranau.
Sabah Loal Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said Mount Kinabalu was a World Heritage site and several issues need to be sorted out before the station is built.
“The allocation to build a fire station at the Gunting Lagadan Hut area on Mount Kinabalu is already available and the station will be the operation centre of the Mount Kinabalu Search and Rescue Team (Mosar),” he said.
Masidi said once completed, the fire station will facilitate the Mosar team, which is now based at the Ranau Fire Station, to carry out operations in the event of any untoward incidents on Mount Kinabalu.
Mosar members are firefighters who specialised in carrying out rescue tasks at high altitude locations.
“Based on the rescue statistics, for the year 2022 from January to June, a total of 26 rescue cases were carried out by the Mosar team,” he said.
Mosar was formed in 2015 following the Mount Kinabalu earthquake on June 5 the same year.
